This a project of our time created by a team of friends from Ghana representing West Africa, the Virgin Islands representing the Caribbean, and UMBC representing the United States. We will be sharing stories of shared experience through music, dance, art, and film.
The Atlantic slave trade impacted all these places, and its impact on the Africans and African-Americans is still very present in our cultures today.
We will celebrate the resilience of these Africans through song, dance, and film. This semester, our UMBC choral students will learn about and experience the Gullah Geechee culture by performing the Ring Shout and learning Gullah Geechee songs from this period, as well as by learning and performing traditional spirituals.
