NEW EFFORTS

The Song of Slavery

This tranquil paradise is the site of a sugar plantation called Annaberg, located in Leinster Bay on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI). Enslaved people from West Africa were forced to work at Annaberg.  Many tried to escape, jumping into The Narrows.  If they could reach the BVIs, they would be free people.  Some made it, others did not survive the swim.
